Many people like to wait for the warming temperatures of spring to spruce up their apartments.  On the other hand, with this long and cold winter, why not start spring cleaning early if you’re stuck inside your apartment anyway?  Here is a list of some spring cleaning ideas to put you in the mood:

1) purge: You have too much stuff.  Don’t try to deny this fact.  All you’re going to do over the course of this new year is accumulate more junk.  Now’s the time to get rid of some things you never use.  My rule is if I didn’t use something at all during the previous year I will donate it to the Salvation Army or Goodwill if I don’t have an emotional attachment to it.  That last part can get tricky, so be honest with yourself on whether or not you really care about that porcelain elephant collection.

2) fix it up: Have you noticed your air filter looks a little dirty?  Maybe a light bulb or two are out in the kitchen.  Go through your apartment and make a short list of issues for your community’s maintenance team to fix.  I always check the weather-stripping to see if light peeks around the door or if my doors creak.  You don’t need to live in a haunted house, unless you enjoy drafty, dusty, creaky, dark conditions.

3) add some spice: It won’t break the bank to replace a few small items around your apartment to add some new life to the space.  I suggest switching out your front door mat, bathroom mats, shower curtain, and/or your dining table centerpiece.  Play with different colors and patterns to make your rooms pop again.  While you’re at it, try hanging a few new pieces of art on the walls or switch photos out in your frames.  Apartments can grow stale quickly, but changing a few inexpensive items can make your apartment a more pleasant place to come home to.  Even simply rearranging your furniture can help.

If you work at these three points I can guarantee your apartment will feel more fun to you and your friends (at least for a little while).  Don’t forget to actually… you know… clean the place, too.  No one likes to see how long you’ve lived there based on the height of the dust on your living room fan.
