There are two AMAZING events going on in Houston this weekend – well, one in Houston and one in Galveston, but we Houstonians love Galveston so much that we consider them part of us. What are they? Let me tell you!

First, FREE PRESS SUMMER FEST! In its sixth year and bigger than ever, Free Press Summer Fest has reached an entirely new level of holdin’-it-down awesome by featuring an all-star lineup of Houston rappers – keeping Houston trill this weekend are Bun B, Slim Thug, Devin the Dude, Z-Ro, Paul Wall, and Mike Jones, in addition to Jack White, Lauren Hill and the Wu-Tang Clan. You can’t miss this; you just CAN’T. It might be muddy, but that never stopped a Houston concert! Other acts include Zedd, Dwight Yoakam, Cage the Elephant, Childish Gambino, Deftones, Mariachi El Bronx, and many, many more! For more details, the official two-day lineup, and for tickets, visit the Free Press Summer Fest website! The site will open in a new tab so you can read about the second awesome event going down this weekend.

Second, we have the always impressive, AIA Sandcastle competition in Galveston! For over 20 years, architects, designers, and engineers have taken their previously-clean tools to Galveston for a throwdown in the sand at one of the world’s largest sandcastle competitions. If you’ve never experienced this competition, please, please come join me! You will be baffled by their talent, impressed beyond belief, a little bummed by your own knee-high sandcastle creations, and once you’ve had your fill, you’ll be minutes away from The Strand, Pleasure Pier, Moody Gardens, and all the historical wonders that Galveston holds. Oh, and did I mention it’s free? And although you might think this could not possibly get any better, you’d be wrong. Check this out – AIA partnered with the City of Galveston this year to attempt to break the world record for most aluminum cans collected in an eight-hour period. Bring your cans from home! Bring your cans from work! Grab some cans on the beach! It’s time to enjoy and beautify simultaneously.

What do you have going on this weekend? Any other amazing events we need to know about? Please share!
