It turns out wine pairings are simpler than you think, especially with the expertise of owner and sommelier, Tammy Hoops, whose Little Italy wine bar features over 70 varieties from all over the globe. Even the most unappealing vegetables like asparagus, green beans, artichokes, and brussels sprouts have their own flavor profile that marries perfectly to a specific wine.

The Beginners Guide to Food and Wine Pairings:
Overall, there are just two basic premises for choosing the best wine to pair. Just two? Yes.
Like flavors go together
Tammy reveals, “If you’re serving a lemon chicken, try to find a wine with notes of citrus. Like an Unoaked Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio.”
Use the wines from that country
“When making Paella, look to pair the dish with wines from Spain. Cooking Spaghetti with Meatball Marinara? Grab a bottle of wine from Italy.”
A Few Wine Pairing Ideas to Get you Started…
Salad & Champagne
Salads and vegetable dishes tend to be the most challenging food category to pair wine with. Luckily, you can’t go wrong with a dry Champagne. For those of us on a budget any dry sparkling wine will do. Champagne tends to cost a higher price since the Champagne Region of France is known for producing some of the finest sparkling wines in the world. (You can only call a wine Champagne if it is from that region.)
Pizza & Rosé
Pizza is one of those foods most of us crave. Rosé wines are versatile and can pair well with a wide variety of toppings. Rosé has a bad reputation of being sweet. This is just not so. There are many dry Rosé’s on the market. My favorite are from Provence, France.
Salmon & Pinot Noir
This may be one of the most well known wine pairings and there’s a reason for it! White fish tend to pair better with white wines, however with Salmon you can go Red…light Red as in Pinot Noir.
