Weekend adventure to Joshua Tree!

One of the great things about working for Camden is the wonderful people I get to work with. I refer to them as Camily, because they are my Camden Family.  I share the same odd days off with another great Camdenite, Allie so we decided to take an adventure close to home and went to Joshua Tree just two hours away from LA, Orange County and San Diego which is convenient to all of our California Communities.

We stayed at the Hidden Valley campground which was beautiful, clean and had bathrooms! The campsites here are first come first serve which is great for a last minute spontaneous adventure, but it gets very busy so if you are going on the weekend it may be a challenge.

During our weekend getaway we hiked Ryan Mountain, walked to the dam and a mill! Once our day was over we went back to our campsite we hiked to the top of the boulders surrounding our site and watched the sunset. It was breathtaking, after the sunset the moon rose which was an added bonus.

This was the first time in years either of us camped so we were “winging it.” Here are some staples we are glad we brought.

-Bring Hand Sanitizer, there are bathrooms but not water at Hidden Valley and you will be glad you came prepared.

-Kebabs are always a good idea. Allie Marinated chicken in soy sauce, lime, olive oil and salt and pepper which was super simple and easy. She cut peppers and put them in plastic bags.  There are fire Pitts there and they have grills so you don’t even need to bring your own and you technically don’t even need charcoal, although there is a charcoal grill there too. We skewered the chicken and the peppers and grilled them up. We followed them with s’mores of course!

-Bring an LED lantern, this was very inexpensive on Amazon.com and it was a life savor.

-Bring warm clothes and a warm sleeping bag. We went at the end of February and it got very chilly at night so make sure you are prepared.

-Don’t forget the boxed wine. What’s a girls getaway without wine? You are out in nature, there is no cell service and the last thing you will want to do is lug around heavy glass wine bottles. Trader Joe’s has an excellent boxed Cabernet that is affordable delicious and you do not need to bring a wine opener.

We successfully created fire! Woo-Hoo!

Well there you have it, this is all you will need for a successful last minute adventure close to home. Make sure to look for more things to do  close to our beautiful properties throughout California!
